"The Jerusalem Municipality is prepared for the possibility of snow," Mayor Moshe Lion said. "The emergency headquarters and the relevant municipality departments are preparing for the potential tasks, briefing the employees, and making sure that all the necessary measures are in order." According to forecasters, the likelihood of snow accumulating on the ground in the capital is very low.
In the Golan Heights, residents woke up to 30-centimeter (11 inches) snow covering the ground on Wednesday. As a result, police shut down roads to allow access to the emergency and medical crews that had been placed on standby. Schools and the Mount Hermon ski resort remained close.
Police asked the public to refrain from unnecessary travel due to the weather conditions. Heavy rainfall is expected in the upcoming days, including flood warnings in the Jordan Valley, the Judaean Desert and the Dead Sea.
In December last year, Israel was hit by its first major storm of the season, dubbed Carmel, which filled the Sea of Galilee above the upper red line, requiring authorities to allow the water to flow out of the lake to avoid flooding. A man was seriously injured in Netanya after a tree pushed over by the storm fell on him and a 58-year-old woman from northern Israel was hospitalized for hypothermia.
