If you are a fan of bananas, you might want to look closely at their color before you digest them.

According to experts who spoke with the Daily Mail, the different colors of the banana – from green to overripe brown – also correspond to a spectrum of health benefits.

According to the report, green bananas are harder to digest, and hence this "slows down the speed at which the carbohydrates in the fruit are converted into glucose and absorbed into the blood." Moreover, this quality makes it healthier for the "good bacteria" to flourish in the colon, which helps us with "unfriendly organisms."

"Green bananas can help with gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea and constipation and diseases such as intestinal cancers," the report went on to say following an interview with Professor Gordon Carlson, a consultant gastric surgeon at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust.

Dietitian Dr. Sarah Schenker told the tabloid that yellow bananas, which are considered ripe but not too ripe, are a "good source of quick-release energy for athletes," and according to that expert their benefits are even greater than those of green ones

"Bananas contain several compounds, such as carotenoids, which are linked to eye health and cancer prevention, and which become more "bioavailable" [available to the body] when the banana ripens,' she said. "With less starch to break down, your digestive system will soak up the nutrients more quickly."

A banana that is yellow with brown sports means that the percentage of the gruit that has become sugar is greater. And according to one study in Japan, this means that they are much more effective at helping the body fight cancer. "The degree of the fruit's anti-cancer effect corresponds to the degree of ripeness – the more patches a banana has, the greater its immunity-boosting power," the tabloid reported.

Brown bananas, which means they are overripe, are mostly sugar, which means they can be used as sweeteners. a
