A senior Israeli official told Israel Hayom on Thursday that Hamas leader in the Gaza Strip, Yahya Sinwar, seeks to create a multi-front conflagration during the holy month of Ramadan, which runs through most of March.

According to the official, the dire situation in Gaza was of no concern to Sinwar since images of suffering from Gaza serve him.  Israel understands Sinwar's desire and therefore it has not been part of the the mediators' efforts to get a deal before Ramadan, the official stressed, adding that in light of the collapse of the talks, the military operation in Rafah was a matter of days.

At a graduation ceremony for IDF officer cadets Thursday Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu commented on the prospects of the impending operation in the southern city of the strip. "The IDF will continue to operate against all of Hamas's battalions throughout the Strip – and this includes Rafah, Hamas's last stronghold. Whoever tells us not to operate in Rafah, is telling us to lose the war – and that will not happen."

In an opinion column published by David Ignatius in The Washington Post, it was claimed that the Biden administration was examining ways to limit Israel's use of American weapons in the upcoming attack on Hamas in the city of Rafah.
