Amid ongoing tensions with political leadership, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir conducted a strategic meeting today, Wednesday, approving the core concept for the Israel Defense Forces' operational plan in the Gaza Strip.

According to the IDF Spokesperson's Unit, the meeting included members of the General Staff Forum, representatives from the Shin Bet, and additional commanders. The discussion reviewed recent IDF actions, including an operation in the Zeitoun area that began on Tuesday.

Lt. Gen. Zamir emphasized the importance of enhancing troop readiness and reservist mobilization while allowing forces a brief respite ahead of upcoming missions. The approved plan aligns with directives from the political echelon, despite public disputes.

This decision follows public tensions with Defense Minister Israel Katz, who declared on Wednesday, "Since October 7, the army operates under strict oversight." Katz emphasized his role in guiding IDF operations and approving senior appointments from the rank of colonel upward, noting that the chief of staff's role is advisory in this regard.

Prior tensions arose between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lt. Gen. Zamir, with the latter opposing Netanyahu's Gaza conquest plan, citing risks to hostages' lives. The Diplomatic-Seucrity Cabinet decision, shaped by consultations between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Shas Chairman Aryeh Deri, and Lt. Gen. Zamir, reflects a compromise. Concerns were raised about reservist burnout, the challenges of fighting in intense summer heat, and the understanding that the operation could endanger hostages. However, some argued that military pressure has proven effective in the past.
