Iran executed Bahman Choubi-Asl, a citizen convicted of spying for Israel, according to Mizan, the news agency of the Iranian judiciary. The report described him as "one of the most important spies for Israel in Iran."
Iran, which has been locked in a decades-long shadow war with Israel, has executed numerous people it accused of working with the Mossad, Israel's intelligence agency. In many cases, however, opposition groups have claimed such charges are a pretext for political persecution or settling internal scores.
Mizan reported that the Mossad's main objective in recruiting Choubi-Asl was to obtain access to government databases and to breach Iran's data centers. He was also allegedly tasked with side missions, including tracking routes of electronic equipment imports.
The Iranian Supreme Court rejected his appeal and upheld the death sentence on charges of "corruption on earth," the agency said.

Tensions between Iran and Israel escalated into direct conflict in June, when Israel struck multiple targets inside Iran. Those strikes reportedly included commando operations deep within the country carried out by Mossad operatives.
The number of Iranians executed this year on charges of spying for Israel has risen sharply, with at least 10 death sentences carried out in recent months.
