Shafali Verma's first ODI fifty in three years powered India to a commanding 106/1 position against South Africa in the Women's World Cup final on Sunday at Navi Mumbai's DY Patil Stadium, with the opener partnering Smriti Mandhana in a 104-run stand before Chloe Tryon's left-arm spin dismissed Mandhana for 45 off 58 balls in the 18th over. Jemimah Rodrigues, whose record-breaking 127 off 134 deliveries led India's world record chase against Australia in the semifinal, joined Verma at the crease as the hosts pursued their first Women's World Cup championship after rain delayed the match start by more than one hour.

Both teams entered seeking maiden World Cup titles, with South Africa advancing behind captain Laura Wolvaardt's brilliant 169 off 143 balls in a dominant semifinal victory over England. India's potential triumph would create a transformative moment for women's cricket globally, building on the impact of previous Indian championship victories including the men's 1983 and 2011 World Cup wins and the 2007 T20 World Cup, with the women's 2017 final appearance already elevating the sport's domestic profile significantly.

Verma completed her milestone fifty by taking a single off Tryon's final delivery in the over that dismissed Mandhana, with the stroke coming three years after her last ODI half-century and arriving in cricket's biggest stage. Stadium silence following Mandhana's edge to wicketkeeper Sinalo Jafta transformed into massive cheers when Rodrigues walked out, with match reports stating, "Expectedly a massive roar greets Jemimah Rodrigues to the middle." Verma had earlier launched a memorable six off Nadine de Klerk's 15th-over delivery, holding her pose after executing a straight-bat shot that recalled her March 2023 carnage at the same venue when she blasted an unbeaten 76 off 28 balls for Delhi Capitals.

That previous DY Patil performance prompted then-captain Meg Lanning to tell Anjum Chopra at the post-match presentation, "Shafali certainly looked as if she was (trying to make sure she caught an early flight)," adding, "That was a pretty cool show to watch from the other end. I was just cheerleading from the non-strikers' end. Some pretty clean hitting, some of the best I've seen, a pretty amazing performance." Lanning's tactical guidance proved prophetic: "I did say to her, 'just keep it simple, stay still and hit the ball straight' – and that's exactly what she did."

Verma's composed performance showed rare maturity despite her return coming only after Pratika Rawal's injury forced selectors to recall the dropped opener, while South Africa's bowling changes through Nonkululeko Mlaba and de Klerk reduced scoring significantly after the powerplay. India concluded the opening 10 overs with their tournament-best powerplay total at 64/0, though only seven runs came across the next three overs as South Africa's spread fields and disciplined bowling temporarily stemmed the flow before Verma approached her milestone with Rodrigues beginning the rebuilding process alongside her.

India's position represented a foundation for chasing their historic first championship, with Wolvaardt's toss victory putting the hosts into bat first after the rain delay interrupted what had been scheduled as a straightforward start to the final. Both Mandhana and Verma demonstrated the aggressive intent that characterized India's tournament progression, particularly the semifinal record chase that saw Rodrigues deliver an innings of a lifetime to eliminate defending champions Australia and set up this title showdown at Navi Mumbai.
