“This is not about so-called judicial reform, it’s about democracy,” Sheila Katz, head of the National Council of Jewish Women, said from the rally in central Tel Aviv – a sea of blue-and-white national flags.
"We would support every initiative that would honor the fallen's memory and the bereaved families during that day," Opposition Leader Yair Lapid says after Netanyahu calls for "preserving the sanctity" of annual remembrance events.
"If national unity were so important to you, you would not have dismantled our democracy, and you would have gone to work on behalf of the citizens of Israel," Opposition Leader Yair Lapid says.
The president warns Israel's enemies against interpreting the country’s internal divisions as a sign of military weakness, saying "Don’t fool yourselves. We have always been united when it comes to our defense and security."
The prime minister criticizes the previous government, saying terrorist attacks doubled under its tenure. He also blames the Israel-Lebanon gas deal and threats from Israeli soldiers not to serve for the recent wave of terror attacks.
Benny Gantz’s State Party made the biggest gain in popularity with 29 seats.
The video, published on social media, caused a strong reaction, with Israel Police Chief Yaakov Shabtai on Sunday ordering Tel Aviv District Chief Ami Eshed to investigate the incident.
Gallant – whose criticism of the Netanyahu-led government's planned judicial reform led to his dismissal – was still on the job, apparently in limbo.
According to reports, some 450,000 demonstrators joined various protests in Tel Aviv and elsewhere in Israel. Earlier, organizers said protests were planned in 150 locations across the country.
