Iran closes Strait of Hormuz in drill; Russia, China to join

Report: Iran plants naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz

US intelligence officials estimate that dozens of naval mines have already been placed along the strategic shipping route, according to the assessments. They believe Tehran possesses between 2,000 and 6,000 naval mines and has the capability to deploy hundreds more quickly. In Washington, officials are warning that the move could threaten freedom of navigation in the waterway, through which a significant share of global oil traffic passes.
