The Israel Police launched the investigation in the wake of a report in Haaretz showing suggesting that former Israel Bar Association chief Efi Nave and then-District Court Judge Eitan Orenstein were engaged in an illegal scheme to appoint their cronies.

The IDF said that its forces were fired upon and shot back, resulting in the death of an Egyptian servicemember. The two sides were working jointly to resolve this matter to prevent any diplomatic repercussions. 

Israel is investigating claims that additional Gazans were hit in the strike.

Shalom Har-Melech, 25, of Homesh was shot to death by terrorists while driving in Judea and Samaria on August 28, 2003. His wife, Limor, who too was in the car, miraculously survived.

He was named as Staff Sgt. Betzalel Zvi Kovach, 20, from Jerusalem.

The move would represent a reversal of President Joe Biden's decision shortly after taking office to suspend such arms sales, which he made in criticism of Saudi Arabia's military involvement in Yemen's civil war and concerns regarding American-made munitions being utilized in airstrikes that resulted in civilian casualties.

Hamas claimed responsibility for the attack just minutes after it happened. The rocket fire, which according to pictures seen by Israel Hayom originated in southern Gaza Strip town of Rafah, reached as far north as the Sharon region, with Kfar Saba – one of the largest cities in Israel – having a siren for the first time since the war started. Rafah is the only large stronghold still held by Hamas.
