New Zealanders appreciate freedom but support lockdown

New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has imposed a nationwide lockdown over one confirmed COVID case. Was that wise?

New Zealanders tend to consider themselves as insignificant on the world stage so they try to show the entire world that they can achieve something great while other countries do all the time.

The New Zealand government's quick decision to impose a nationwide lockdown over one coronavirus case is supported by the public because they appreciate the freedoms that came with the eradication of COVID during the first wave last year. They protect society's vulnerable members because that is part of the "Kiwi" – a love for doing nothing but sitting around indulging.

New Zealanders trust that the government will make the best decision to sustain them through lockdown and the pandemic, one New Zealander told me.

Another said that as they are very close to Australia, they saw the disaster there and thought it was a good idea to stop flights to Australia a couple of weeks ago. Now, it is important to take the essential measures to eradicate the one case in the country as quickly as possible.

Foreigners here also think this is a good decision. A woman from the United States whom I interviewed said she was very concerned by the situation in the US and hopes that the same hopefully won't happen here. She adds that conspiracy theories are rife in the US because the public doesn't trust the government.

We see the people in Auckland are willing to adhere to a seven-day lockdown, and other around the country are willing to accept a three-day lockdown. If it can prevent a disaster then a couple of days or a week in isolation is nothing and in any case, people are going to receive subsidies during this period.

Of New Zealand's population of 5 million, 934,207 people have been fully vaccinated, and 1.62 million have received their first shot.

I have been stuck in New Zealand for 17 months and as far as I'm concerned, this is a wise decision because it will prevent a dramatic increase in COVID cases.

We see in the following days how the situation develops and how quickly we'll recover unless we have a lot of new cases.

I think that seven days from now, we will have a better understanding of the situation and a better vision of the future in the following months.
