The shortlist for the 2022 Genesis Prize – often called the Jewish Nobel – was announced on Monday by the Genesis Prize Foundation.

The list, as declared by the committee on its website is as follows: Pfizer chairman and CEO Albert Bourla; actor and director turned activist Sacha Baron Cohen; fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg; renowned professor and author Yuval Noah Harari; actress Scarlett Johansson; and finally, political activist and acclaimed Nazi-hunter Serge Klarsfeld.

The Genesis Prize award ceremony has historically been held to honor and celebrate Jews who not only inspire through their professional achievements but through their commitment and contribution to Jewish values and the Jewish people as well. The $1-million prize is typically donated by the winner to nonprofit organizations.

In 2018 winner Natalie Portman refused to get the prize in protest of Israeli policy toward the Palestinians. Other controversies also emerged in recent years.

The chance to vote for the Genesis Prize Laureate is an invitation to reflect on the meaning of Jewish achievement, how it impacts the world and shapes our modern identity," Co-Founder and Chairman of the Genesis Prize Foundation said in a statement. "Six extraordinary finalists represent Jewish talent in all its diversity – in terms of age, gender, geography, and professional achievement. We invite you to make your voice heard and vote for the 2022 Genesis Prize Laureate."

The winner and the organization that the prize money will go to will be announced in early 2022. While the general public gets to cast its vote online, the decision ultimately rests with the committee.
