A hostage crisis unfolded at a pre-trial detention center in the southern Russian region of Rostov on June 16, as six detainees, some with reported ties to the Islamic State (ISIS) militant group, overpowered guards and took them captive, according to Russian media reports.

The men, who include some already convicted of terrorism offenses, knocked out the bars of a window in their cell and entered a guard room where they took at least two prison officers hostage, stated the Baza Telegram channel. State media sources confirmed that some of the hostage-takers were accused of terrorism offenses, including alleged affiliations with ISIS. The same group claimed responsibility for the deadly attack on a Moscow concert hall in March.

Russia's Federal Penitentiary Service acknowledged the situation, stating, "Two employees of a pre-trial detention center in Rostov were taken hostage." The service assured, "The institution operates as usual, the situation is under control," while also confirming the presence of law enforcement agencies at the scene.

The Interfax news agency reported that the prisoners had demanded a vehicle and safe passage during negotiations with authorities. Footage from the area showed roads being cordoned around the detention center as the standoff continued.
