US extends Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire, prisoner talks to begin

The northern ceasefire, which commenced on November 27 and extended for 60 days until Saturday, included Hezbollah's commitment to withdraw north of the Litani River. In exchange, Israel was expected to complete its withdrawal beyond the Blue Line – the internationally recognized border.

The White House announced Sunday night an extension of the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah until February 18. According to the announcement, the governments of Israel, Lebanon, and the US will initiate discussions concerning the return of Lebanese terrorists by the IDF – specifically Hezbollah members.

Lebanese Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati confirmed the development and stated that following Beirut's request, US-mediated negotiations will commence regarding the "Lebanese prisoners" in Israeli custody.

The northern ceasefire, which commenced on November 27 and extended for 60 days until Saturday, included Hezbollah's commitment to withdraw north of the Litani River. In exchange, Israel was expected to complete its withdrawal beyond the Blue Line – the internationally recognized border – at the period's conclusion. However, due to Hezbollah violations, Israel maintained positions at certain points in southern Lebanon.
