Half of Americans believe Israel commits 'genocide' in Gaza, new polls show

Survey data reveals stark partisan divide as anti-Israel accusations gain ground among younger Americans and Democratic voters.

Two new polls published on Wednesday paint a troubling picture for Israel: approximately half of Americans believe Israel is committing "genocide" in Gaza. The data raises deep concerns among Israeli political sources, who understand that the penetration of anti-Israel rhetoric into mainstream American discourse could dramatically harm Washington's support for Israel.

According to a Quinnipiac University survey, 50% of US voters believe Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, compared to 35% who reject this claim and 15% who expressed no clear position. Similar figures emerged from a parallel Harvard/Harris Poll survey, which also found that 50% of Americans believe the severe accusation.

Behind the national average lies a deep ideological divide. In the Quinnipiac survey, 77% of Democratic voters claim Israel is committing genocide, compared to 51% of independent voters and only 20% of Republicans. The Harvard/Harris survey presents similar trends but with more moderate gaps: 66% of Democrats, 45% of independents, and 38% of Republicans believe the claim.

Young Americans against Israel

The generational gap stands out particularly. In the Harvard/Harris survey, in 4 out of 6 younger age groups (18-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-54), more than half the respondents believe Israel is committing genocide, with an alarming peak of 61% among those aged 25-34. In contrast, in the older age groups (55-64, 65+), most respondents reject the claim, with 58% and 61% respectively not believing it.

Alongside harsh criticism from the American left, voices are beginning to emerge on the right that adopt severe accusations against Israel. Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene declared earlier this month: "The most truthful and easiest thing to say that Oct 7th in Israel was horrific and all hostages must be returned, but so is the genocide, humanitarian crisis, and starvation happening in Gaza."

Greene, who repeats these accusations consistently, demands the end of American military aid to Israel. Another influential voice is that of Candace Owens, the conservative media personality with millions of followers, who has repeated genocide claims since the first weeks of the war. In a post last month, she wrote: "Gaza is a concentration camp where genocide is happening before everyone's eyes. Goebbels-level propaganda was needed to convince the world this isn't happening, but it is." It should be noted that Owens has been accused in the past of spreading conspiracy theories and antisemitic libel.

Although these are still fringe voices on the right, their digital influence is far broader than their formal political weight. The penetration of anti-Israel rhetoric into the American right, which until now served as an almost absolute political support base for Israel, constitutes a red flag warning in Jerusalem.

AIPAC is sending fundraising emails attacking me for saying, "the most truthful and easiest thing to say that Oct 7th in Israel was horrific and all hostages must be returned, but so is the genocide, humanitarian crisis, and starvation happening in Gaza."

Israeli sources view the penetration of the term "genocide" into mainstream discourse, particularly among the younger generation and Democratic voters, as a real strategic threat to Israel's position in the international arena. This represents the product of a sustained delegitimization campaign by anti-Israel elements, which, if it becomes entrenched in American consciousness, could severely damage Washington's political and security support for Israel for decades to come.
