"Over the past day, the troops have eliminated terrorists and located weapons in the hospital area, while preventing harm to civilians, patients, medical teams, and medical equipment," the military said in a statement.

It is unclear if the decision to hold the talks is a result of a new assessment on the possibility of the war being dragged out into the next school year and escalating further, or whether this is just a preparatory step to make sure Israel would be ready for any scenario.

According to an IDF statement, Faiq Mabhouh was hiding in a compound at Shifa, from which he operated and advanced terrorist activity.
