The senior American official published clarifications and corrections to statements he made on television networks following Israel's strongly worded messages to the White House.

"As officers approached, the individual brandished a firearm and an armed confrontation ensued, during which shots were fired by our personnel," Secret Service Chief of Communications Anthony Guglielmi said.
