Over 5,500 Israelis have now been quarantined amid concerns about the global spread of the COVID-19 virus. World Health Organization says some 91,700 people worldwide were infected with the coronavirus, which has so far claimed 3,100 lives.
“The region depends on air connectivity, and support from governments will really help the airlines to get through this difficult period," says International Air Transport Association’s Vice President for Africa and the Middle East Muhammad Ali Albakri.
Other Iranian officials infected with virus include “Sister Mary,” who served as spokeswoman for the students who seized the US Embassy in Tehran in 1979, and head of a task force that tried to downplay coronavirus.
Health Ministry says two of the people brought the virus back after a trip to Italy and a third caught it locally. All three have light symptoms. The United States on Saturday reported its first death from the disease, a man in his 50s in Washington state.
Over 2,800 people have so far died from the COVID-19 virus and over 84,000 have been infected worldwide.
Several new patients picked up the virus in Italy. Man returning from Japan after mandatory isolation there found to still be sick. Health Ministry urges anyone who was in contact with them to quarantine themselves.
Israeli diplomat: "No other country has stopped tourists, already mid-flight, from entering their territory, as Israel has done. At the moment everyone is focused on handling the crisis, but in a few months we will feel the consequences."
