Gaza Strip's Health Ministry said Thursday that Israeli forces shot and killed a Palestinian man near the border separating the coastal enclave from Israel.
The ministry identified the man killed as Mohammed Abu Sharbin, 20.
The Israel Defense Forces said troops fired toward several Palestinians who had approached the security fence and were seen sabotaging it, without elaborating.
Hamas, the terrorist group that rules Gaza, has recently scaled down a seven-months-long border riot campaign, as Egypt has been trying to mediate a truce between the group and Israel.
Israel says it is defending its border and accuses Hamas of using the protests as cover to stage border infiltrations and attacks.
More than 170 Palestinians have been killed in the demonstrations that began March 30. A Palestinian sniper shot dead an Israeli soldier in July.
