Afikim, a network of family enrichment and resource centers has announced an emergency campaign to raise funds for Israeli families who in the best of times live in poverty. With the onslaught of the coronavirus, many who were barely hanging on have lost their jobs. With no income whatsoever and zero savings, these families are more dependent than ever on the food packages that Afikim provides.

Afikim is a nonprofit organization that was established about 10 years ago. It strives to provide at-risk children in Israel and their parents with tools to help them escape the cycle of poverty, first and foremost through education.

The NGO said it was in constant contact with these families, who are literally begging for ways to shield their children from this disaster. The group recently started to deliver everything from food packages and grocery cards to internet and communication services. One teacher requested computers so her kids can keep up with homework, and Afikim was right there with donations of computer tablets.

"Afikim cannot turn its back to these cries for help and has opened an emergency campaign to supply meals and food packages. I am turning to you to donate whatever you can, to help the children and their parents through these impossibly difficult times. Every bit counts," Afikim Director Moshe Y. Lefkowitz appealed in a recent mass e-mail.

The NGO stressed that donations are crucial to keeping impoverished Israeli children off of the streets and protected in their homes where we can properly nourish them and help them to keep up with their schoolwork.

Afikim has a proud history of not turning away any Israeli child, the group noted, saying its strategy of involving the entire family into the embrace of educational and social care has resulted in productive Israeli citizens.
