Record 1,464 new corona cases confirmed, mostly among young people

Unlike the first wave, older Israelis -- who are most at risk from the virus -- make up a small percentage of new confirmed cases. Jerusalem is home to the highest number of symptomatic carriers, followed by Tel Aviv and Bnei Brak.

The 24 hours from midnight Wednesday to midnight Thursday saw another record high in new confirmed corona cases in Israel, with 1,464 out of the 26,446 tests conducted in that period turning out positive, the Corona National Information and Knowledge Center reported Friday.

As of Friday morning, there were 16,517 active or symptomatic corona patients nationwide. In the past 24 hours, 30 new patients have been listed in serious condition, bringing the total number of patients in serious condition to 121.

The number of fatalities stood at 350, and 18,652 people have recovered.

Since March 24, Israel has conducted a total of 1,136,196 corona tests. The number of cases is doubling every 16 days, compared to every three days during the peak of the first wave.

As has been widely reported, the second wave is seeing a much higher rate of infection among young people, with 27% of the new cases reported Friday morning appearing in Israelis ages 0-19, and another 37% of Israelis ages 20-39 testing positive. Israelis ages 40-59 accounted for 22% of the new cases in the past 24 hours, and Israelis ages 60-79 -- whose age puts them at the highest risk -- accounted for only 9% of the new cases.

Jerusalem still leads the nation in the number of symptomatic cases, with 2,282 recorded Friday, up from 1,161 a week ago. The capital is followed by Tel Aviv-Jaffa, with 1,393 symptomatic patients on Friday, compared to 890 a week ago, and Bnei Brak, with 1,177 symptomatic cases, compared to 741 a week ago.
