Israeli hit TV show When Heroes Fly has been sold to Apple TV, which will remake it as part of its international streaming service, Israel Hayom has learned.

The show, produced by Keshet International, was first broadcast in Israel on Channel 12 in May 2018.

The runaway hit won critical acclaim in Israel and went on to win the Best Series Award at the first Cannes International Series Festival in April 2018.

In October of that year, Netflix acquired the international broadcasting rights for the series, whose second season is currently in production. The Apple TV remake will be called Echo 3.

The series, created by Omri Givon and based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Amir Gutfreund, tells the story of four friends who, 11 years after having a major falling out, reunite on a mission to find the missing – and long believed dead – sister of one of them, who is also the former lover of one of the friends.

Set deep in the Colombian jungle, the story takes them on a journey of self-discovery and forces them to confront their own demons to find peace.

Apple TV  has contracted Academy Award winner Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker) to write the script for Echo 3.

Much like the original, the show will be filmed in South America and will follow a group of former special forces soldiers who find themselves at the center of an international conspiracy after trying to save the love interest of one of them near the Colombia-Venezuela border.

Karni Ziv, head of Drama and Comedy at Keshet Media Group told Israel Hayom that "these days, when the Israeli content market is facing challenges and difficulties, this is particularly happy news. Original Israeli content is our greatest asset."

Givon added, "It's very exciting that Apple believes in our story. This is further proof of the power and importance of Israeli art. A series like When Heroes Fly couldn't have been made without the hard work of the dozens of people who poured their heart and soul into it."
