IDF troops thwarted an attack on the Israel-Syria border shortly after midnight Sunday, killing 4 terrorists attempting to plant explosives in the area.

The military has been on high alert in the northern sector over tensions with the Lebanon-based Hezbollah terrorist group, which is seeking reprisal over the death of one of its operatives in an airstrike in Syria last month that has been attributed to Israel.

"A short time ago, IDF forces foiled an attempt to place explosive devices along the border with Syria," the military said in a statement.

"Special forces that were carrying out an ambush near an IDF post in the southern Golan Heights spotted a terrorist cell planting explosive devices along the border. IDF troops and an aircraft opened fire on the four-member cell and hit them."

There were no casualties among the Israeli troops, the statement said, stressing that "Israel holds Damascus responsible for any attack emanating from its territory."

Tensions were high in southern Israel as well Sunday after Gaza-based terrorists fired a rocket on communities near the volatile border. The projectile was intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system.

The IDF carried out several strikes in Gaza on Sunday night in response to the rocket attack, targeting Hamas posts, including a facility used for the production of concrete needed for the construction of the group's grid of underground terror tunnels, and other underground facilities.

"The IDF will not allow any terrorist activity against Israel and will continue to act as necessary against attempts to harm Israeli citizens,"  the military said in a statement.

"Israel holds the Hamas terrorist organization responsible for what transpires in the Gaza Strip, and it will be held accountable for any terrorist activity against Israeli citizens."
