Israeli officials are reportedly considering asking US President Donald Trump for a commutation or pardon in favor of former spy Jonathan Pollard, who is currently on parole in the United States, Channel 13 News reported on Friday.
Released from prison in 2015 after serving 30 years of a life sentence for passing classified information to Israel, Pollard is not allowed to leave the United States for a period of at least five years, with the parole board imposing strict guidelines on his release.

But after Democrat Joe Biden's victory in the US presidential election earlier this month, Trump, who is due to leave the White House on January 20, is expected to grant pardons during his last weeks in power similar to his predecessors.
Pollard's parole is set to be reviewed on November 21, however, and the Justice Department may decide to commute his sentence.

In August 2019, the former spy told Israeli broadcaster Channel 12 that he asked Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to intervene and help convince the US to ease restrictions on his movements so that he can take care of his wife, who has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
"I am confident, I hope Netanyahu can make this call. I cannot imagine Netanyahu not making the call or Trump refusing," he said.
