Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was scheduled to convene a press conference on Sunday in order to formally roll out the plan. As a result, the summer break will commence only in August, rather than in early July or late June.
The goal of this unusual measure is to compensate for the disruption caused by remote learning during the past 12 months as a result of the ongoing coronavirus crisis.
It is unclear what compensation mechanism will be in place for teachers, as it is unlikely that they could be forced to work.
