Until now, 20% of transgender women who underwent such a procedure were left with scars. In addition, Hefetz's technique reduced operative times from six hours to about 60-90 minutes.
Ten such operations have been conducted in Israel and the technique has even been adopted in the United States.
"What we do is enter to the vestibule of the mouth, underneath the skin, actually reach either the thyroid or the cartilage, and remove them," Hefetz said. "The shave is faster than the thyroidectomy; I think it's easier than performing a thyroidectomy."
According to Hefetz, the procedure is beneficial not only for transgender patients but also for men who are bothered by an over-pronounced Adam's apple.
Dr. Victoria Banuchi, the first surgeon to perform the new procedure in the United States, told i24NEWS, "The first time I heard him [Hefetz] speak about this procedure, I knew I had to learn how to do it. I think it's a great technique, we were successful and our patient was very thrilled."
Banuchi and Hefetz have worked together for several years pioneering thyroid and parathyroid surgeries.
