Israel must choose a side when it comes to the conflict between the United States and China, The Institute for National Security Studies said this week.

On Monday, the institute presented to President Isaac Herzog its annual Strategic Survey for Israel report that summarizes the main points of an analysis of Israel's strategic environment in terms of national security, with its potential threats and opportunities, and specifies a range of policy recommendations for decision-makers.
It said, among other things, that Jerusalem must prepare for a series of possible climate emergencies and economic crises.
With regard to Iran, the report said that the nuclear program of the Islamist Republic has enabled the regime to acquire a nuclear weapon in the shortest time possible, should it choose to do so.
It is this progress that holds the Iranian government back from renewing the 2015 nuclear deal – officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action – without significant benefits in return, although it is doubtful whether Washington can or wants to provide these, the report said.
The institute further noted that Israel's dependence on the US continues, although aid has decreased due to the internal polarization among Americans and the focus on internal problems and the conflict with China, as opposed to dealing with matters in the Middle East.
