Some 18 months after a civil war broke out in Ethiopia, the first Israeli humanitarian mission is expected to arrive at the embattled country this week.

The relief effort was the brainchild of Likud MK Gadi Yevarkan. He will lead the mission together with Labor MK Emilie Moati and MK Vladimir Beliak from Yesh Atid. The Society for International Development Israel (SID Israel), which calls itself an umbrella organization that brings together over 170 Israeli private companies, government agencies, civil society organizations, academic programs, and institutions, has coordinated the logistics of this mission.
Members of the delegation include senior health professionals. It will leave for Addis Ababa on Monday and return to Israel on Thursday. Additional such missions are expected after a permanent coordination mechanism is established between Israeli and Ethiopian hospitals.
The delegation will treat patients and conduct urgent operations, including in Gondar, where many prospective Jewish immigrants are located.
