In recent months, terrorists have used breaches in Israel's security fence to sneak into the country and perpetrate terror attacks. After three Israelis were killed in a terror attack in Elad on May 5, the Israel Police launched a nationwide operation against Palestinians who resided in the country illegally.
The police arrested 500 Palestinians and dozens of others who provided them employment and housing.
The Defense Ministry and IDF too have shifted efforts to the area. Soldiers will be stationed for tens of kilometers along the so-called "seam zone," a term used to refer to an area east of the Green Line and west of the Jerusalem-adjacent security fence.
The Kfir Brigade, the IDF's largest infantry brigade, will be tasked with the responsibility, commanded by IDF Col. Sharon Altit.
If successful, the pilot will expand further along the seam zone.
