Iran International, an opposition-linked media outlet, attributed the denial of service attack that blocked access to Fars News for most of Sunday afternoon and evening hours to an Israeli hacker group called "Army of Thieves."
Fars is the IRGC's official news agency and it is considered one of Iran's main news outlets. The news agency is directly run by officials in the IRGC – the most powerful branch of the Iranian Armed Forces loyal solely to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Cyberattacks are something of a mainstay in the shadow war that Iran and Israel have been waging for several years. Iranian hackers often target Israeli websites ranging from government and municipal portals to the business sector.
Most recently, it was revealed that Iranian agents ran a months-long phishing scheme targeting senior Israeli envoys, politicians, defense officials, academics, and businesspeople.
