"The president made clear that this was an attack against the civilized world," the White House said in a readout of the call. "The President stressed the ironclad U.S. commitment to Israel's security, and agreed that his team would remain in constant touch with their Israeli counterparts."
Friday night's attack – perpetrated by a 21-year-old Palestinian terrorist – shocked the world, with leaders sending their condolences and statements of support to Israel.
Vice President Kamala Harris called President Isaac Herzog after the end of Shabbat, condemning the terrorist attacks and expressing condolences, as did French President Emmanuel Macron, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was headed to the Middle East to meet with Israeli officials for talks about the Iran nuclear threat and terrorism.
He will also travel to Ramallah to meet with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. Before arriving to Israel, however, Blinken will travel to Egypt for talks with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
He will be the second top Biden official to visit Israel this year, following National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, who made the trip just last week as US concerns were growing over the violence as well as the direction of Netanyahu's new right-wing government.
