The perpetrator – later identified as 41-year-old Daoud Abdel Razak Faiz – had a work permit and crossed into Israel through the Hashmonaim crossing on foot early in the morning, as he had done almost every day in the past two weeks. He traveled to Gadera, where he spent several hours, and picked up a truck with an Israeli license plate that does not belong to him.

At around 9 a.m. he traveled to the Maccabim checkpoint along Route 443, made a U-turn when he saw Israeli soldiers and ran over the four youngsters.

Forces opened fire, but the attacker managed to flee. He hit another car with two Israelis, who were lightly injured, on the way – before being tracked down and neutralized at the Hashmonaim crossing, some seven kilometers (4 miles) away.

The victim was later identified as Cpl. Maksym Molchanov, 20, who moved to Israel from Ukraine in 2017.

Hamas praised the attack, saying it was a "message that there is no security for the occupier and confirmation of the increasing presence of the resistance and its influence."

Incident occurred shortly after one IDF officer and three soldiers were injured in Nablus as an improvised explosive device was set off as they passed by.
