Back home: These are the stories of the 8 hostages released Thursday

The hostages that were released from Hamas captivity on November 30, 2023

Mia Schem, 21, Shoham

Mia was kidnapped by Hamas terrorists to Gaza from the Nova music festival. On Oct. 7, as the massacre was taking place, Mia managed to call her family and tell them that she was shot in her leg.

A few days later, Hamas published a hostage video featuring Mia in which she was seen with an injured hand. In the edited footage, Mia said she was operated on and asked to return home as soon as possible.

Mia's mother, Keren, told Israel Hayom that the Oct. 7 phone call was the last time the family heard from her.

"I'm incredibly worried about her condition. In the video, we only saw her upper body and she told us that she was injured in her leg. This level of uncertainty makes it hard for me to breathe."

Sapir Cohen, 26, Kiryat Ata

Sapir was kidnapped together with her boyfriend, Alexander (Sasha) Trupanov, 28, and several family members from their home in Nir Oz. Sapir and Sasha moved to central Israel about a month before the brutal Hamas attack. On Oct. 7 they were visiting Sasha's family in Nir Oz.

When the attack began, the family hid together, but the terrorists broke into their home. The terrorists killed the father of the family, Vitaliy, and kidnapped Sapir, Sasha, his mother Yelena, and grandmother Tati. Yelena and Tati., who hold dual Israeli-Russian citizenships, were released from Hamas captivity on Nov. 29

Shani Goren, 29, Nir Oz

Shani, an educator, was kidnapped from her home after hiding in the shelter.

Shani's older sister, Shira, said, "In the morning, after it became clear that terrorists had infiltrated the kibbutz, Shani was on the phone with Nofar, our brother's partner.  After two hours on the phone, the terrorists broke into the shelter and dragged her out of the apartment. The call remained connected, but they didn't hear Shani, only conversations in Arabic."

While in captivity she shared her food with fellow hostage, 12-year-old Eitan Yahalomi, as the latter revealed after being released from Hamas captivity on Nov. 27.

Shani's mother, Tamar, told Israel Hayom, "There is a feeling of optimism. I have hope that something good is finally happening. I really hope that everyone will come back."

Ilana Gritzewsky, 30, Nir Oz

Ilana was kidnapped with her partner, Matan Zangauker, 24. Ilana had made aliyah to Israel from Mexico 14 years prior, after which her parents also moved to the Jewish state.

On the morning of the attack, Matan initially tried to calm down his mother by texting her that they had a bomb shelter inside the apartment. Sometime later, when the terrorists had entered their home, he texted his mother saying, "They are here, they are in our home." and "I love you. Don't cry."

Nili Margalit, 41, Nir Oz

Nili, a healthcare professional at a children's hospital, was kidnapped from her home. For a while, it was unclear what happened to Nili, but eventually, she was declared kidnapped by Hamas. Freed hostages said that while in captivity, Nili provided medical assistance to others in captivity.

Nili's friend said she is a talented and professional nurse who cares for her patients. Residents of Nir Oz await Nili's return.

Aisha Alziadna and Bilal Alziadna

The two Bedouin siblings are residents of Rahat. Their brother, Hamza (22), and their father, Yusuf (53), were left behind in captivity. The family was abducted from the kibbutz of Holit while their father was working with his children in the field. In recent days, the uncle of Aisha and Bilal has been exerting all possible pressures, primarily through the media, to ensure that decision-makers do not forget about the family from the Negev. This comes after he felt that, like in many other areas in the country, the Bedouin are being left behind.
