The IDF confirmed Wednesday morning its airstrike in Gaza had killed Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh's three sons. Haniyeh said three of his grandchildren were also killed in the hit.
As the war rages, ceasefire talks are underway in Egypt. Israeli officials state that under a proposed US truce plan, Israel has agreed to allow 150,000 Palestinians to return to northern Gaza without security checks. However, the officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, claim Israel believes the Islamist group Hamas does not truly want to strike a deal.
They say Hamas would be required to provide a list of female, elderly, and sick hostages it still holds captive in return for the concessions on Palestinian returns. The office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declined to comment on the purported deal.
Hamas has stated the latest ceasefire proposal from Egyptian and Qatari mediators does not meet its demands, but that it will study it further before responding definitively. The situation remains volatile as talks continue to try to end the deadly Gaza conflict, which has now personally impacted Hamas' leadership with the alleged killing of Ismail Haniyeh's three sons by Israeli airstrikes.
