Ukraine has conducted its first strike on Russian territory using American-provided ATACMS missiles, according to people familiar with the matter who spoke to the Financial Times. Videos circulated on Telegram showed a military facility in flames and a smoke trail in the sky above it resembling that of a missile.
The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed an attack on its soil had taken place in the Bryansk region, claiming its air defense systems intercepted five of the six missiles launched.
According to Bloomberg, military sources told RBC Ukraine that Ukrainian forces targeted a facility in Russia's Bryansk region, marking the first deployment of these long-range missiles since the Biden administration authorized their limited use against Russian targets.
Ukrainian military leadership confirmed striking an ammunition depot in Karachev, located approximately 71 miles from the Ukrainian border, resulting in the detonation of stored munitions. Military officials declined to specify which weapons were employed in the operation, citing security protocols.
While Ukraine's General Staff did not confirm the use of ATACMS, they claimed responsibility for the strikes on the Russian arsenal, which they had previously attacked with drones. "The destruction of ammunition depots will continue for the army of the Russian occupiers in order to stop the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine," the General Staff said.
