Former hostage Emily Damari posted an Instagram Story on the eve of Israel's Memorial Day for Fallen Soldiers and Victims of Terrorism, which is observed today (Tuesday).
In the Story, Damari described how she marked Memorial Day last year while held in captivity. "It was a day I will never forget," she wrote.
"When the terrorists started watching Al Jazeera, we realized that Memorial Day had begun. At 11 a.m., we decided to stand for a moment of silence in memory of the fallen, who in their death commanded us to live, in memory of our friends who were killed."
Damari was recently chosen to light a torch at Israel's 77th Independence Day torch-lighting ceremony, joining a lineup of trailblazers, including fellow former hostage Eli Sharabi. Culture and Sports Minister Miri Regev commented on her selection: "Emily is an extraordinary Israeli hero who has touched all our hearts and become a symbol of inspiration and resilience."
