A 21-year-old man armed with a shotgun and carrying a gasoline canister was shot and killed Sunday by US Secret Service agents after he allegedly attempted to break into Mar-a-Lago, the Florida estate of US President Donald Trump.
According to an official statement, the suspect approached the perimeter of the Palm Beach property while carrying the weapon and the fuel container on his person. Agents assigned to protect the president opened fire, and the man was pronounced dead a short time later.
Authorities said the suspect's identity is known to law enforcement, but has not yet been released pending notification of his family.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the young man's motives.
Officials stressed that no line of inquiry has been ruled out, and that there is no confirmation whether the incident constituted an attempted assassination at this stage.
