US President Donald Trump announced a two-week ceasefire in the war with Iran. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he was halting the bombing, conditional on Iran agreeing to reopen the Strait of Hormuz immediately, fully and safely. The announcement came just an hour and a half before the deadline Trump had set for Iran, after which he had threatened to strike the country's energy infrastructure and bridges.

According to a senior White House official who spoke to CNN, Israel is also part of the ceasefire and has agreed to suspend its strikes while negotiations continue, the official said.

"We received a 10 point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to between the United States and Iran, but a two week period will allow the Agreement to be finalized and consummated."

Trump said the decision came after talks with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan's army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir who "requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran. We have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East," he added.

Earlier Tuesday, Sharif, whose country is serving as a mediator between Iran and the US, issued an urgent appeal to all sides about five hours before the ultimatum expired. "Diplomatic efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution are advancing steadily and strongly, with the potential to produce tangible results soon," Sharif said, asking Trump "to extend the deadline by two weeks to allow diplomacy to complete its course." At the same time, he appealed to Tehran: "Pakistan asks our Iranian brothers to open the Strait of Hormuz for two weeks as a goodwill gesture."
