A flag bearing two swastikas and a Star of David appeared on a rooftop at a New York University campus building on Wednesday, the NYPD confirmed Thursday.
The flag, which appeared near Washington Square Park, resembled the many purple New York flags flying on campus buildings but was adorned with two swastikas surrounding a Star of David. According to the student newspaper Washington Square News, the flag appeared around 5:00 p.m. and was removed roughly 15 minutes later.
The NYPD received an emergency call at 5:21 p.m. reporting harassment. When officers arrived, a man told them a flag had been altered to display swastikas. A police spokesperson said the investigation was ongoing and no arrests had been made.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani responded to the incident, writing, I am outraged that a swastika flag was raised overlooking Washington Square Park. This hateful antisemitic act was meant to spread fear among and intimidate Jewish New Yorkers. It has no place in our city."
