A tense night on NATO's eastern border. Sirens sounded overnight between Wednesday and Thursday in the eastern Polish city of Lublin amid a widespread wave of Russian airstrikes in neighboring Ukraine.
At the same time, reports emerged of an unusual incident in the surrounding countryside. Polish radio station Radio ZET reported that firefighters and security forces were dispatched to secure the site of an explosion in the village of Tarnawa-Kolonia, which is administratively part of Lublin Province.

When the emergency crews arrived, they found that a huge crater about 10 meters (33 feet) wide had opened in the ground.
Polish authorities are investigating the circumstances of the incident, including whether it was caused by stray fire, debris from an interceptor missile or a weapon that crashed inside Polish territory.
