Teenager mauled to death by lioness in front of shocked visitors
Gerson de Melo Machado, 19, was fatally mauled by a lioness after scaling a 20-foot wall into its enclosure at a Brazil zoo. Machado had previously been diagnosed with schizophrenia and had spent time in a number of institutions, according to O Correio Brazilense. He grew up in conditions of “extreme poverty” in a household with a history of mental health problems.
