France has managed the Tomb of the Kings since the late 19th century and closed the site for an extensive $1.1 million restoration in 2009. Since its closure, religious and nationalist Israelis have protested outside the tomb’s gates, calling for it to be opened. On top of that, Israeli religious groups have sought to strip France’s ownership in court.
As unrest continues to rattle Lebanon, Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Latif Derian, the top cleric for Sunni Muslims, urges Beirut authorities to form an emergency government. “The time has come to meet the people’s demands and the national free will that transcends sects, political parties, and regions,” he says.
