Hatred drives a person mad, our sages said. Anyone who heard senior journalists and politicians on the Left this week could see for themselves how hatred has driven them insane.
In the far-away US, it looked like Donald Trump was losing the presidential election. That is what the big media networks declared, and that is what the initial vote count indicated. But Biden's victory, even if it turns out to be certain, still wasn't a done deal, and certainly not official. The entity that elects the president, the electoral college, has not yet convened. The vote counting is not over. In any case, the loser did not recognize the results. He claimed the election had been stolen, and that there was fraud, and that in effect victory had been snatched from him.

This is not the first time that the American election system has led to a delay in announcing the victor of the presidential race. There is also nothing wrong in Trump demanding a probe into whether or not there was fraud, and we cannot rule out his claim that "every legal vote" counts, and not "every vote counts," as he puts it.
But none of that is what matters most to the Israeli perspective. What does decide things for us is the record the outgoing president is leaving behind. Trump did not condemn us day and night over people in Jerusalem decided to turn balconies into extra rooms, did not skip us when visiting the Middle East, and did not leak our military secrets to media. He also didn't author resolutions against us in the UN Security Council and never went over our heads to sign a deal that paved Iran's way to a nuclear bomb.
Exactly the opposite: Trump embraced Israel and the Jewish people like no other American president ever has. He led a fierce battle against anti-Semitism, and of course recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, brought Iran to the mat, led Israel to three peace agreements, and decreed that no person would be evacuated from his home under any future peace agreement – and these are only a few steps about which there is Jewish and Israeli consensus.
And now, even though he even pushed through one of the most historic moves of the past few decades, the best pundits in Israel broke out in cries of schadenfreude and evil. In the days of former President Obama, these same people preached about the importance of following America's dictates, and now they say "thank God we got rid of Trump," as former Labor leader Shelly Yachimovich said on a prime time public broadcast.
"We're rid of a disturbed idiot and a liar, who held everything just in contempt and embraced everything that was evil and loathsome." Really, Shelly? Trump embraced the country that pays your salary – is it a loathsome and evil country? "Four years of an evil spirit, lies, and bullying," Meretz leader Nitzan Horowitz called the Trump legacy. And they aren't the only ones.
The mean spirit that seized everyone who call themselves "the Zionist Left" this week didn't end with spitting in the face of the leader of half of America. In a typical imitation of the American Left, our own "pluralists" started crying, "Don't give liars a platform" – in other words, to silence political opponents.
"Shut off the microphone to the father (Netanyahu), the son (Yair Netanyahu), and the army of mouthpieces," left-wing propagandist Eldad Yaniv called. And he wasn't the only one saying that, either.
You'll be astonished to hear it, but the enlightened Left managed to go even lower. After slinging mud at the president of the only superpower in the world, who will hold that position for another two months – the "thinking camp" began eulogizing former Palestinian Authority negotiator Saeb Erekat.
They weren't mourning a defender of Israel, a Jewish philosopher of world renown, the late Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks – they were mourning a man who skillfully and consistently blackened Israel's image in the world over the course of decades. Only recently, in one example of many, Erekat false accused IDF soldiers of intentionally killing a disabled man, even though film footage proved that the incident was a planned terrorist attack. For these aforementioned leftists, that attack and others in this country don't matter. "A man of peace," they called Erekat, the same people who humiliated the person who really brought us peace – Donald Trump. Oh, the shame.
Once again we see that Israel is not the top priority for representatives of the Left. Nor is peace. Hatred is what that camp has in common. It's chilling to think that such a mentality, such evil and irrationality, could ever lead Israel.
