Newsweek has ranked Israel's Chaim Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer as the world's ninth-best hospital for 2020, moving up one spot from last year's list.

The weekly magazine noted the hospital's breakthrough research in cardiology, gynecology, genetics and medical education. Mention was also given to its specializations in rehabilitation, pediatrics, women's health, post-traumatic stress disorder and eating disorders.

As Israel's largest medical facility, Sheba Medical Center cares for approximately 1.6 million people annually and houses more than one-quarter of all clinical research done in Israel.

The hospital also established the Jewish state's first facility for the quarantine and treatment of individuals who test positive for coronavirus.

Sheba Medical Center Director General Yitshak Kreiss said welcomed the news, saying, "This selection reflects another year of advanced medical excellence, breakthrough research and leading innovation worldwide. I am happy and proud for all our 9,131 dedicated and professional employees that think out of the box every day.

"Our continued climb up the rankings puts us on par with the world's leading hospitals. As in every situation, and especially today, when we are leading the national effort to treat the coronavirus, it is a privilege to provide the people of Israel with the best medical services in the world."

The Rochester-based Mayo Clinic led the global rankings for a second year. Tel Aviv's Sourasky Medical Center, also known as Ichilov Hospital, was named the world's 34th top hospital.

Newsweek said the rankings were "based on recommendations from medical professionals, results from patient surveys and key medical performance indicators.
