Can the elderly manage in the Zoom era?

"Applications like ZOOM are important to society to keep the world fully connected, as if nothing has changed," says director of product management at Soluto, a company that wants to help older people cope with the new reality imposed on them by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, older people have had to confine themselves for fear of contracting the novel coronavirus, because they are considered an at-risk population and have a much lower chance of survival if they begin to exhibit symptoms of the respiratory illness linked to the virus, COVID-19.

"One of the most significant solutions aimed at making home confinement more tolerable is a video conferencing application called ZOOM," says a Shira Gershoni, who is the director of product management at Soluto, a high-tech company dedicated to supporting "all home technologies."

According to Gershoni, Zoom is more than just a tool for working from home and conversing with friends in the era of social distancing, it is also "a solution for removing the loneliness of elderly who need more human interaction while circumscribed to their homes."

Gershoni created an online tutorial that explains how to use Zoom step-by-step.

"Applications like ZOOM are important to society to keep the world fully connected, as if nothing has changed," Gershoni said.

Here is an excerpt of the tutorial, as submitted by Soluto

5 helpful tips:

  • Don't give up: At some point, they might almost give up. Don't let them! Encourage your parents, tell them they're only 2 clicks away from connecting with the rest of the family and get them excited about seeing all the grandkids virtually.
  • Point out: Have another device with you, so when you finally get to the point where they can see your video (but can't figure out how to turn their video on) - show them where to click using the other device.
  • Use visuals: During the call, send them screenshots and mark where to tap. Remember - their device may be in a different language or browser.
  • Be resourceful: If they tell you they see a screen which might feel like a deadend, it will be easier to ask them to go back to the link you sent them and click on it again. It will launch the meeting screen, exactly where you want them.
  • Don't leave loose ends: Don't forget to also teach them how to leave the meeting.
