The government on Sunday approved a plan for the deployment of fiber-optic cable networks in Israel. Communications Minister Yoaz Hendel has been pushing the plan as "critical for the communications market," particularly at a time of crisis.

According to financial daily Globes, the plan will see the new fiber-optic-based network replace the existing copper cables that will allow very high surfing speeds, and will substantially improve internet speeds in Israel. This, in turn, will allow for many new applications to be introduced, chiefly to accelerate the provision of digital services to both the domestic and enterprise markets.
