Syrian state media reported that the country's air defenses "intercepted Israeli aggression" over the capital, Damascus, in the early hours of Monday morning. The Israeli military did not comment on the report.

Witnesses reported hearing heavy explosions on the southern edge of Damascus, an area where Iranian-backed militias are entrenched.
State media did not give details of what was hit by the Israeli aircraft. If true, the report would count the latest strikes against Iranian assets in Syria, Israel's neighbor to the north, where the Islamic republic is trying to establish a substantial military footprint.
The Syrian report claimed that Israeli military planes flew over the Golan Heights "to hit select targets." A Syrian Army official was quoted as saying, "Our air defenses are continuing to repel the Israeli missile attacks over the skies of the capital."
Syrian media often boasts about engaging Israeli aircraft and fire. Regional experts, however, agree most of these claims are hollow.
Around noon Monday, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claimed that "six non-Syrian militia fighters" were killed in strikes targeting arms depots, including missile stores, around Damascus.
Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said all the fighters killed were "pro-government" forces.
