According to the Straits Time, which frequently quotes security officials, Amirull Ali, 20, planned to kill at least three Jews as they left a synagogue on Waterloo Street after Shabbat morning prayers.

Ali, who was a full-time member of the Singapore Armed Forces when he was arrested in February, was radicalized after researching the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on the Internet.

According to the Singaporean security services, he planned to travel to the Gaza Strip to join the military wing of the terrorist group Hamas.

Ali had chosen his targets on the assumption that they would have performed their military service in Israel and therefore committed alleged atrocities against the Palestinians.

However, Home Affairs and Law Minister K. Shanmugam said that many Jewish people in Singapore are local citizens and would have served in that country's military and not the IDF.

The man was arrested under the Internal Security Act, one of Singapore's harshest laws against felonies and misdemeanors, which allows detention without trial.
