The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the United States surpassed 33.21 million on Thursday, with the death toll exceeding 593,000, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

The country's case count rose to 33,213,320, with the death toll reaching 593,156 as of 7:20 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on Thursday, showed the CSSE tally.
The United States still leads the world in the numbers of both confirmed COVID-19 cases and deaths.
According to the data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, the current average daily case count in the country is less than half of the level recorded at the start of May. The US has seen an average of 23,407 new infections per day over the past week, down from about 49,600 on May 1, a drop of 53%.
Federal data shows the US.is reporting an average of 1.7 million daily vaccinations, and nearly 50% of the US population has received one dose or more.
