The country has been under a caretaker government since Diab's cabinet resigned in the wake of the Beirut port blast last year. Shortly after the explosion, Diab agreed to remain in office until a new government is formed while requesting that President Michel Aoun call for early parliamentary elections.
The general election is scheduled for May 2022 but could be postponed due to political and economic turmoil.
The World Bank has called Lebanon's crisis one of the worst depressions of modern history. The currency has lost more than 90% of its value and more than half of the population has been propelled into poverty.
