The elder brother of President Isaac Herzog, he spent 40 years in the IDF and took part in diplomatic negotiations under five prime ministers, an official statement read. Over the course of his long military service, Herzog held the post of head of the Strategic Planning Department in the IDF Planning Directorate, as well as functioning as military secretary to four different defense ministers.
The PMO said that Foreign Minister Yair Lapid has approved the appointment, and Herzog will retain the post of US ambassador even after Lapid replaces Bennett as prime minister when the rotation agreement takes effect.
Bennett mentioned Herzog's "years-long experience in the fields of security and diplomacy, his deep familiarity with the strategic challenges Israel faces, foremost among them the threat posed by Iran's nuclear program."
Herzog's appointment will soon be brought to the cabinet for approval.
